Hypoimmune Islets Achieve Insulin Independence after Allogeneic Transplantation in a Fully Immunocompetent Non-Human Primate

Researchers reported that allogeneic transplantation of genetically engineered, primary, hypoimmune, pseudo-islets resulted in their engraftment into a fully immunocompetent, diabetic non-human primate wherein they provided stable endocrine function and enabled insulin independence.

ITIH5 as a Multifaceted Player in Pancreatic Cancer Suppression, Impairing Tyrosine Kinase Signaling, Cell Adhesion, and Migration

Cellular effects, including cell migration, focal adhesion formation and protein tyrosine kinase activity, induced by forced inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor heavy chain 5 (ITIH5) expression in pancreatic cancer cell lines were studied in stable transfectants.

    Abstract

Pirfenidone Alleviates Chronic Pancreatitis via Suppressing the Activation of Pancreatic Stellate Cells and the M1 Polarization of Macrophages

Scientists focused on the role of Pirfenidone (PFD) in diminishing fibrosis and immune response in chronic pancreatitis, using a mouse model induced by caerulein. The research extended to in vitro studies examining the influence of PFD on pancreatic stellate cells’ behavior and the polarization of macrophages.

Imaging of Extracellular and Intracellular ATP in Pancreatic Beta Cells Reveals Correlation between Glucose Metabolism and Purinergic Signaling

Investigators focused on pancreatic beta cells and tested the hypothesis that there was an association between intra- and extracellular ATP levels which depend on glucose provision.

GLP1R and GIPR Expression and Signaling in Pancreatic Alpha Cells, Beta Cells, and Delta Cells

Scientists presented the evidence for glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor (GLP1R) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor (GIPR) expression in the major islet cell types, before addressing signaling pathways engaged, as well as their influence on cell survival and function.

Efferocytosis Reprograms the Tumor Microenvironment to Promote Pancreatic Cancer Liver Metastasis

The authors found that the colonization of the hepatic metastatic site was accompanied by low-grade tissue injury and that efferocytosis-mediated clearance of parenchymal dead cells promoted macrophage reprogramming and liver metastasis.

Plasticity-Induced Repression of Irf6 Underlies Acquired Resistance to Cancer Immunotherapy in Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma

Using a mouse model of PDAC, researchers found that resistance was reproducibly associated with an epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), with EMT-transcription factors ZEB1 and SNAIL functioning as master genetic and epigenetic regulators of this effect.

Fibroblasts in the Aged Pancreas Drive Pancreatic Cancer Progression

Since fibroblasts have profound impacts on pancreatic cancer progression, scientists investigated whether age-related changes in pancreatic fibroblasts influenced cancer growth and metastasis.

    Abstract

Cancer-Related Cells and Oncosomes in the Liquid Biopsy of Pancreatic Cancer Patients Undergoing Surgery

Scientists characterized cellular and acellular blood-based analytes in portal and peripheral blood before pancreatic manipulation, during tumor dissection and immediately after surgical resection to determine the effects of the surgery.

The Role of G Protein-Coupled Receptors and Receptor Kinases in Pancreatic β-Cell Function and Diabetes

The authors describe recent insights into G protein–coupled receptors signaling (GPCRs) and the importance of GPCR kinases function in modulating β-cell physiology.
