    TOP STORY

Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts Enhance the Gland-Forming Capability of Prostate Cancer Stem Cells
In this study, researchers investigated whether cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAF) may regulate the biology of prostate cancer stem cells (CSC) by using a conditional PTEN deletion mouse model of prostate adenocarcinoma to isolate both CAF cultures and CSC-enriched cell fractions from the tumors. SCIENCE NEWS

    Light at Night and Cancer
A new study from has found an additional link between Light At Night and cancer. [University of Haifa Press Release]

Novel Nanotechnology Collaboration Leads to Breakthrough in Cancer Research
Researchers have teamed up to not only visualize a virus but to use the results to adapt the virus so that it can deliver medication instead of disease. [Press release from the University of California, Los Angeles discussing online prepublication in Science]

Worms Point to a Link Between Cellular Glue and Cancer Growth
Scientists have discovered that a protein that helps make cells sticks together also keeps them from dividing excessively, a hallmark of cancer progression. [Press release from the University of California, Santa Barbara discussing online prepublication in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA]

New Model May Simplify High-Dose Radiosurgery Planning
There is yet no straightforward way to determine the optimal dose level and treatment schedules for high-dose radiation therapies such as stereotactic radiation therapy, which is used to treat brain and lung cancer, or for high-dose brachytherapy for prostate and other cancers. Radiation oncologists may have solved the problem by developing a new mathematical model that encompasses all dose levels. [Press release from the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center discussing online prepublication in Science Translational Medicine]

    LABORATORY RESEARCH

Atomic Structure of Human Adenovirus by Cryo-EM Reveals Interactions Among Protein Networks
Here, researchers report the structure of the whole human adenovirus virion at 3.6 angstroms resolution by cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), revealing in situ atomic models of three minor capsid proteins (IIIa, VIII, and IX), extensions of the (penton base and hexon) major capsid proteins, and interactions within three protein-protein networks. [Science]

Repression of Wnt Signaling by a Fer-Type Nonreceptor Tyrosine Kinase
Researchers found that the Caenorhabditis elegans ortholog of the Fer nonreceptor tyrosine kinase, FRK-1, limits Wnt signaling by preventing the adhesion complex-associated beta-catenin, HMP-2, from participating in Wnt-dependent specification of the endoderm during embryogenesis. [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA]

Tubulin-Targeting Chemotherapy Impairs Androgen Receptor Activity in Prostate Cancer
This study investigates the contribution of microtubules and the cytoskeleton to androgen-mediated signaling, and the consequences of their inhibition on androgen receptor activity in human prostate cancer. [Cancer Res]

Thymus-Derived Glucocorticoids Mediate Androgen Effects on Thymocyte Homeostasis
Researchers provide here an unrecognized mechanism how androgens contribute to thymic involution by stimulating local synthesis and release of glucocorticoids in the thymus. [FASEB J]

PIM Kinase Inhibitors Downregulate STAT3Tyr705 Phosphorylation
These results identify a novel role for PIM-3 kinase as a positive regulator of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) signaling and suggest that PIM-3 inhibitors cause growth inhibition of cancer cells by downregulating the expression of pSTAT3Tyr705. [Mol Cancer Ther]

Ultrasound Molecular Imaging of VEGFR2 in a Rat Prostate Tumor Model Using BR55
The purpose of this study is to evaluate BR55, a new VEGFR2-specific ultrasound contrast agent, for imaging prostate tumors in an orthotopic model in the rat. [Invest Radiol]

Synthesis and Characterization of Amphiphilic Lipopolymers for Micellar Drug Delivery
Embelin loaded Poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(2-methyl-2-carboxyl-propylene carbonate-graft-dodecanol) (PEG-PCD) micelles showed significant inhibition of C4-2 prostate cancer cell proliferation, while no obvious cellular toxicity was observed for blank micelles. [Biomacromolecules]

    CLINICAL RESEARCH

MRS-Guided HDR Brachytherapy Boost to the Dominant Intraprostatic Lesion in High Risk Localised Prostate Cancer
Inclusion of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) information on the location of dominant lesion allows a safe increase of the dose to the dominant lesion while dose to the remaining target can be even substantially decreased keeping the same, high tumour control probability. [BMC Cancer]

Metronomic Administration of Zoledronic Acid and Taxotere Combination in Castration Resistant Prostate Cancer Patients. Phase I ZANTE Trial
The bi-weekly combination of docetaxel (50mg/m2) followed by zoledronic acid was feasible and show promising anti-tumor activity. [Cancer Biol Ther]

A Generalized Linear-Quadratic Model for Radiosurgery, Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy, and High-Dose Rate Brachytherapy
Researchers developed a generalized linear-quadratic model that encompasses the entire range of possible dose delivery patterns and derived formulas for special radiotherapy schemes. [Sci Transl Med]
