    TOP STORY
Shp2 Promotes Metastasis of Prostate Cancer by Attenuating the PAR3/PAR6/aPKC Polarity Protein Complex and Enhancing Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition
Researchers reported that Shp2 is upregulated in prostate cancers and is associated with a poor disease outcome, namely tumor metastasis and shortened patient survival. [Oncogene] Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
    LABORATORY RESEARCH

Development of Novel Radio-Chemotherapy Approaches Targeting Prostate Tumor Progenitor Cells Using Nanohybrids
Investigators describe the synthesis of biocompatible, catechin-loaded and gelatin-conjugated carbon nanotubes with anticancer properties and demonstrate their potential for the eradication of prostate cancer stem cells in combination with X-ray irradiation. [Int J Cancer] Abstract

Capsaicin Reduces the Metastatic Burden in the Transgenic Adenocarcinoma of the Mouse Prostate Model
Scientists investigated the chemopreventive potential of capsaicin on prostate cancer using the transgenic adenocarcinoma of the mouse prostate (TRAMP) model. The TRAMP is a murine model that resembles the progression of human disease. [Prostate] Abstract

Androgens Enhance the Glycolytic Metabolism and Lactate Export in Prostate Cancer Cells by Modulating the Expression of GLUT1, GLUT3, PFK, LDH and MCT4 Genes
Researchers investigated the role of androgens in controlling the glycolytic metabolism and lactate efflux in prostate cancer cells. Androgen-responsive LNCaP cells were treated with 5α-dihydrotestosterone for 12-48 hours, and their glycolytic metabolism, lactate production and viability were analyzed. [J Cancer Res Clin Oncol] Abstract

Gabarapl1 Mediates Androgen-Regulated Autophagy in Prostate Cancer
Scientists found that GABA(Archive) receptor-associated protein like 1 (Gabarapl1), a ubiquitin-like modifier, participates in the regulation of autophagy. Gabarapl1 is transcriptionally regulated by androgen receptor and has a repressive role in autophagy. [Tumor Biol] Abstract

The Stress Hormone Norepinephrine Increases Migration of Prostate Cancer Cells In Vitro and In Vivo
Investigators examined norepinephrine’s possible role in metastasis formation and development in vitro and in vivo. Treatments with norepinephrine in mice xenografted with human DU145 prostate cancer cells increased the metastatic potential of these cells. [Int J Oncol] Abstract

    CLINICAL RESEARCH

A Randomized, Double-Blind Study Comparing the Addition of Bicalutamide with or without Dutasteride to GnRH Analog Therapy in Men with Non-Metastatic Castrate-Resistant Prostate Cancer
Researchers prospectively evaluated dutasteride plus bicalutamide in men with asymptomatic, non-metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer with rising prostate-specific antigen. [Eur J Cancer] Abstract

Categorical versus Continuous Circulating Tumor Cell Enumeration as Early Surrogate Marker for Therapy Response and Prognosis during Docetaxel Therapy in Metastatic Prostate Cancer Patients
Investigators prospectively assessed categorical and continuous circulating tumor cell-counts for their utility in early prediction of radiographic response, progression-free and overall survival in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer patients treated with docetaxel. [BMC Cancer] Full Article

Efficacy of Treatment with a GnRH Antagonist in Prostate Cancer Patients Previously Treated with a GnRH Agonist
Researchers retrospectively examined 18 patients with prostate cancer who received androgen-deprivation therapy and who were treated with a GnRH antagonist (degarelix) after they showed an elevated PSA while on GnRH agonist therapy. [Cancer Chemother Pharmacol] Abstract

    REVIEWS
Determinants of Receptor- and Tissue-Specific Actions in Androgen Signaling
The authors review topics that pertain to androgen specificity issues at different levels, both in cultured cells and tissues in vivo, with a particular emphasis on the nature of the steroid, the response element sequence, the androgen receptor cistromes, pioneer/licensing factors, and coregulatory proteins. [Endocr Rev] Abstract

Anticancer Properties of Carotenoids in Prostate Cancer
Clear clinical evidence supporting the use of carotenoids in prevention or treatment of prostate cancer is not available, due to the limited number of published randomized clinical trials, and the varying protocols used in the existing studies. The authors discussed the potential impact of carotenoids on prostate cancer by giving an overview of the molecular mechanisms and in vitro/in vivo effects.
