The Influenza-Injured Lung Microenvironment Promotes MRSA Virulence, Contributing to Severe Secondary Bacterial Pneumonia

By conditioning Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) ex vivo in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid collected from influenza infected mice, investigators found that the influenza-injured lung microenvironment dynamically induced MRSA to increase cytotoxin expression, while decreasing metabolic pathways.

ASK1-ER Stress Pathway-Mediated Fibrotic-EV Release Contributes to the Interaction of Alveolar Epithelial Cells and Lung Fibroblasts to Promote Mechanical Ventilation-Induced Pulmonary Fibrosis

Researchers demonstrated that apoptosis signal-regulating kinase 1 (ASK1)-endoplasmic reticulum stress pathway-mediated fibrotic-extracellular vesicle released from alveolar epithelial cells contributed to fibroblast activation and the initiation of pulmonary fibrosis during mechanical ventilation.
