    TOP STORY
Targeting Small Cell Lung Cancer Harboring PIK3CA Mutation with a Selective Oral PI3K Inhibitor PF-4989216
PF-4989216 inhibited PI3K downstream signaling and subsequently led to apoptosis induction, and inhibition in cell viability, transformation, and xenograft tumor growth in small cell lung cancers harboring PIK3CA mutation. [Clin Cancer Res] Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Role of Activin-A in Cigarette Smoke-Induced Inflammation and COPD
Researchers studied the effect of cigarette smoke (CS) on primary human bronchial epithelial cells in vitro. Next, activin-A signaling was antagonized in vivo by administration of follistatin in mice exposed to air or CS for 4 weeks. [Eur Respir J] Abstract

Early Host Responses of Seasonal and Pandemic Influenza A Viruses in Primary Well-Differentiated Human Lung Epithelial Cells
Investigators hypothesized that host responses during infection of well-differentiated, primary human bronchial epithelial cells may differ between seasonal and H1N1 pandemic influenza A virus isolates from a fatal and nonfatal case. [PLoS One] Full Article

Autophagy Mediates Avian Influenza H5N1 Pseudotyped Particle-Induced Lung Inflammation through NF-κB and p38 MAPK Signaling Pathways
Researchers showed that H5N1 hemagglutinin pseudotyped viral particles significantly induced autophagy both in A549 human lung epithelial cells and in mouse lung tissues, which was primarily due to hemagglutinin of H5N1 virus. [Am J Physiol Lung Cell Mol Physiol] Abstract

Characterization of Innate Responses to Influenza Virus Infection in a Novel Lung Type I Epithelial Cell Model
Researchers characterized influenza virus replication dynamics and host responses of lung type I epithelial cells and identified the capacity of epithelial cell-derived type I interferon to regulate specific modules of antiviral effectors to establish an effective antiviral state. [J Gen Virol] Abstract

Ras Regulates Kinesin 13 Family Members to Control Cell Migration Pathways in Transformed Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells
Scientists showed that expression of the microtubule depolymerizing kinesin KIF2C is induced by transformation of immortalized human bronchial epithelial cells by expression of K-RasG12V and knockdown of p53. [Oncogene] Abstract

A Novel Molecular Pathway for Snail-Dependent, SPARC-Mediated Invasion in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Pathogenesis
Treatment of human bronchial epithelial cell lines with TGF-β1 and inhibition of TGF-β1 mRNA expression modulated Secreted Protein, Acidic and Rich in Cysteine (SPARC) expression. Inhibition of MEK phosphorylation downregulated SPARC. [Cancer Prev Res] Abstract

Epigenetic Regulation of ANKRD18B in Lung Cancer
ANKRD18B mRNA expression was significantly decreased or silenced in lung cancer tissues and cell lines associated with hypermethylation of the ANKRD18B region. Demethylation agent 5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine significantly increased ANKRD18B mRNA expression in lung cancer cell lines. [Mol Carcinog] Abstract

Diversin Increases the Proliferation and Invasion Ability of Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer Cells via JNK Pathway
Researchers found that Diversin was overexpressed in non-small-cell lung cancer, and exhibited direct correlation to poor differentiation, advanced TNM stage, lymph node metastasis and survival time. [Cancer Lett] Abstract

Combination of Liquiritin, Isoliquiritin and Isoliquirigenin Induce Apoptotic Cell Death through Upregulating p53 and p21 in the A549 Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells
Scientists evaluated the cytotoxicity and antitumor activity of liquiritin, isoliquiritin and isoliquirigenin on human non-small lung cancer cells including apoptosis-induction, inhibition of apoptotic pathways and to explore the underlying mechanism. [Oncol Rep] Abstract

Targeting IGF-I and IGFBP-3 Signaling Pathways: A Novel Therapeutic Approach for Asthma
The authors summarize the role of insulin like growth factor I (IGF-I) and insulin like growth factor binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3) in the context of allergic airway disease and discuss the therapeutic potential of various strategies targeting the IGF-I and IGFBP-3 signaling pathways for the management of asthma. [Am J Respir Cell Mol Biol] Abstract
