    TOP STORY
Surfactant Protein D Suppresses Lung Cancer Progression by Downregulation of Epidermal Growth Factor Signaling
Researchers demonstrated that surfactant protein D inhibited the proliferation, migration and invasion of A549 human lung adenocarcinoma cells. [Oncogene] Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
BAX Inhibitor-1-Associated V-ATPase Glycosylation Enhances Collagen Degradation in Pulmonary Fibrosis
Researchers examined whether an endoplasmic reticulum stress regulator, Bax inhibitor-1, regulates collagen accumulation, which is both a marker of fibrosis and a pathological mechanism of fibrosis. [Cell Death Dis]

Cx26 Regulates Proliferation of Repairing Basal Airway Epithelial Cells
Scientists report that induction of Cx26 in repairing human airway epithelial cells is associated with cell proliferation. They also showed that Cx26 is expressed in a population of CK14-positive basal-like cells. [Int J Biochem Cell Biol] Abstract

Early Life Ozone Exposure Results in Dysregulated Innate Immune Function and Altered MicroRNA Expression in Airway Epithelium
Researchers hypothesized that the conducting airway epithelium of neonates may be a target of immunomodulation by ozone. To test this hypothesis, they evaluated primary airway epithelial cell cultures derived from juvenile rhesus macaque monkeys with a prior history of episodic postnatal ozone exposure. [PLoS One] Full Article

Thapsigargin Blocks Pseudomonas aeruginosa Homoserine Lactone-Induced Apoptosis in Airway Epithelia
Pseudomonas aeruginosa secrete N-(3-oxododecanoyl)-homoserine lactone (C12) as a quorum-sensing molecule to regulate gene expression, and micromolar concentrations are found in the airway surface liquid of infected lungs. Exposure of the airway surface to C12 caused a sudden loss of transepithelial resistance within one hour, and was characterized by a degradation and relocation of the tight junction protein ZO-1 from the apical to the basolateral pole of polarized human airway cultures. [Am J Physiol Cell Physiol] Abstract

A Wnt/ß-Catenin Negative Feedback Loop Represses TLR-Triggered Inflammatory Responses in Alveolar Epithelial Cells
Researchers showed that Wnt/ß-catenin signaling is repressed in A549 alveolar epithelial cells during a Toll-like receptor ligand stimulation with Mycobacterium bovis Bacillus Calmette-Guerin or lipopolysaccharide. [Mol Immunol] Abstract

    LUNG CANCER

Harnessing the Lysosome-Dependent Antitumor Activity of Phenothiazines in Human Small Cell Lung Cancer
Researchers evaluated the potential utility of phenothiazines in human lung cancer. They showed that phenothiazines as single treatment decreased cell viability and induced cell death preferentially in small cell lung carcinoma over non small cell lung carcinoma cell lines. [Cell Death Dis] Full Article

The MicroRNA miR-34a Inhibits Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) Growth and the CD44hi Stem-Like NSCLC Cells
Researchers showed that transfection of synthetic miR-34a, but not the negative control microRNA oligonucleotides in three NSCLC cell lines, i.e., A549, H460, and H1299, inhibited their holoclone formation, clonogenic expansion, and tumor regeneration in vivo. [PLoS One] Full Article

Flavonoid Components in Scutellaria baicalensis Inhibit Nicotine-Induced Proliferation, Metastasis and Lung Cancer-Associated Inflammation In Vitro
Scientists investigated the therapeutic efficacy of flavonoid components in Scutellaria baicalensis on proliferation, metastasis and lung cancer-associated inflammation during nicotine induction in the A549 and H1299 lung cancer cell lines. [Int J Oncol] Abstract

Telmisartan Exerts Anti-Tumor Effects by Activating Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor-? in Human Lung Adenocarcinoma A549 Cells
Scientists showed that the survival rates and cell viabilities of A549 cells were all reduced by telmisartan in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. Their results also demonstrated that telmisartan dose-dependently inhibited the expression of ICAM-1 and MMP-9. [Molecules] Abstract | Download Full Article
