    TOP STORY
An Integrin β3-KRAS-RalB Complex Drives Tumor Stemness and Resistance to EGFR Inhibition
Researchers revealed that integrin avβ3 serves as a marker of breast, lung and pancreatic carcinomas with stem-like properties that are highly resistant to receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors such as erlotinib. [Nat Cell Biol] Abstract | Press Release

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Submersion and Hypoxia Inhibit Ciliated Cell Differentiation in a Notch Dependent Manner
Scientists hypothesized that submersion creates a hypoxic environment that prevents ciliated cell differentiation by blocking the gene expression program required for ciliogenesis. This was confirmed by showing expression of multicilin and FoxJ1, key factors needed for ciliated cell differentiation, was inhibited when normal human bronchial epithelial were cultured in submerged and hypoxic conditions. [Am J Respir Cell Mol Biol] Abstract

Sphingosine 1-Phosphate (S1P) Induced Interleukin-8 (IL-8) Release Is Mediated by S1P Receptor 2 and Nuclear Factor ?B in BEAS-2B Cells
Researchers indicated that S1P induced IL-8 release is mediated by S1P receptor 2 and the transcription factor nuclear factor-?B. [PLoS One] Full Article

Efficacy of IFN-?1 to Protect Human Airway Epithelial Cells against Human Rhinovirus 1B Infection
Researchers examined the protective potential of interferon (IFN)-?1 and compared it with the previously established protecting effect of IFN-ß. A549 cells and human primary bronchial epithelial cells were treated with either IFN-ß or IFN-?1 for 18 hours. [PLoS One] Full Article

Lung Fibroblasts Accelerate Wound Closure in Human Alveolar Epithelial Cells through Hepatocyte Growth Factor/c-Met Signaling
Researchers hypothesized that hepatocyte growth factor secreted by fibroblasts (FBs) would enhance wound closure in alveolar epithelial cells (AECs). Wound closure was measured using a scratch wound healing assay in primary human AEC monolayers and in a co-culture system with FBs. [Am J Physiol Lung Cell Mol Physiol] Abstract

Vam3, a Resveratrol Dimer, Inhibits Cigarette Smoke-Induced Cell Apoptosis in Lungs by Improving Mitochondrial Function
Scientists investigated the effects of Vam3 (a resveratrol dimer extracted from Vitis amurensis Rupr) on cigarette smoke-induced cell apoptosis in lungs in vitro and in vivo and the underlying mechanisms of action. [Acta Pharmacol Sin] Abstract

    LUNG CANCER

Cross Talk between the Bombesin Neuropeptide Receptor and Sonic Hedgehog Pathways in Small Cell Lung Carcinoma
Scientists showed that small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) tumor samples feature co-expression of Sonic hedgehog (Shh) and bombesin (BBS)-cognate receptor. They also demonstrated that BBS activates Gli in SCLC cells, which is crucial for BBS-mediated SCLC proliferation, because cyclopamine, an inhibitor of the Shh pathway, hampered the BBS-mediated effects. [Oncogene] Abstract

Enhancement of Auranofin-Induced Lung Cancer Cell Apoptosis by Selenocystine, a Natural Inhibitor of TrxR1 In Vitro and In Vivo
Researchers demonstrated that selenocystine could enhance auranofin-induced A549 human lung adenocarcinoma cell apoptosis in vitro and in vivo through synergetic inhibition of thioredoxin reductase 1 (TrxR1). [Cell Death Dis] Full Article

C646, a Selective Small Molecule Inhibitor of Histone Acetyltransferase p300, Radiosensitizes Lung Cancer Cells by Enhancing Mitotic Catastrophe
Scientists investigated the radiosensitizing effect of C646, a selective small molecule inhibitor of p300 histone acetyltransferase, and explored the underlying mechanisms. [Radiother Oncol] Abstract

Secreted Clusterin Gene Silencing Enhances Chemosensitivity of A549 Cells to Cisplatin through AKT and ERK1/2 Pathways In Vitro
Scientists determine that vector expressing short hairpin RNA against secreted clusterin RNA enhances the chemosensitivity in human small cell lung cancer A549 cells in vitro by inhibition of phosphorylated ERK1/2 and Akt. [Cell Physiol Biochem] Full Article

Biological Effects of 125I Seeds Radiation on A549 Lung Cancer Cells: G2/M Arrest and Enhanced Cell Death
Researchers investigated the biological effects of external beam radiation and continuous low dose rate radiation on lung cancer cells. [Cancer Invest] Abstract

AbbVie Announces Initiation of Pivotal Phase III Study of Veliparib (ABT-888) for Patients with Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
AbbVie announced the initiation of a global Phase III clinical trial evaluating the safety and efficacy of its investigational compound, veliparib (ABT-888), in patients with previously untreated locally advanced or metastatic squamous non-small cell lung cancer. [AbbVie Inc.] Press Release

Genoa Pharmaceuticals and McMaster University Demonstrate Inhaled Pharmacokinetics Enables Improved Pirfenidone Activity with Significant Promise to Enhance IPF Treatment Safety and Tolerability
Genoa Pharmaceuticals and collaborators Drs. Martin Kolb and Kjetil Ask at McMaster University announced additional measured advantages of inhaled GP-101 in the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Their results indicate that very small inhaled doses deliver oral-superior, but short-lived lung levels. [Genoa Pharmaceuticals] Press Release
