    TOP STORY
miR-31 Dysregulation in Cystic Fibrosis Airways Contributes to Increased Pulmonary Cathepsin S Production
Scientists identified epithelial cells as a source of pulmonary Cathepsin S (CTSS) activity with the demonstration that cystic fibrosis (CF) airway epithelial cells express and secrete significantly more CTSS than non-CF controls in the absence of pro-inflammatory stimulation. [Am J Respir Crit Care Med] Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Wnt3a Mitigates Acute Lung Injury by Reducing P2X7 Receptor-Mediated Alveolar Epithelial Type I Cell Death
Scientists hypothesized that P2X7 receptor-mediated purinergic signaling and its interaction with Wnt/β-catenin signaling contributes to alveolar epithelial type I cell death. [Cell Death Dis] Full Article

Oncostatin M Overexpression Induces Matrix Deposition, STAT3 Activation, and SMAD1 Dysregulation in Lungs of Fibrosis-Resistant BALB/c Mice
Gp130 cytokines including IL-6, LIF, CT-1, but not IL-31, induced STAT3 activation and SMAD1/5/8 signaling suppression in C10 mouse lung epithelial cells and BEAS 2B bronchial epithelial cells, and researchers found that pharmacological inhibition of STAT3 activation reversed oncostatin M-induced SMAD1/5/8 signaling suppression in vitro. [Lab Invest] Abstract

Effect of P2X7 Receptor Knockout on AQP-5 Expression of Type I Alveolar Epithelial Cells
To elucidate the role of the P2X7 receptor in alveolar epithelial type I cells scientists characterized the pulmonary phenotype of P2X7 receptor knockout mice by using immunohistochemistry, western blot analysis and real-time RT PCR. [PLoS One] Full Article

Der p 2 Promotes Motility of Airway Epithelial Cell Attributing to AKT/GSK3β-Associated Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition
Using human bronchial cell BEAS-2B as cell model incorporating with immunoblotting and real-time quantitative PCR, scientists reveal that der p 2 significantly diminished epithelial marker E-cadherin and elevated mesenchymal marker vimentin and alpha-smooth muscle actin in both protein and mRNA levels. [Mol Cell Biochem] Abstract

    LUNG CANCER

TMEPAI Inhibits TGF-β Signaling by Promoting Lysosome Degradation of TGF-β Receptor and Contributes to Lung Cancer Development
Depletion of transmembrane prostate androgen-induced protein (TMEPAI) in A549 lung cancer cells inhibits cell proliferation, migration and invasion, while TMEPAI expression in nude mice promotes tumorigenesis. [Cell Signal] Abstract

TC-1 Overexpression Promotes Cell Proliferation in Human Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer that Can Be Inhibited by PD173074
Researchers found that thyroid cancer-1 (TC-1) is highly expressed in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and that its aberrant expression is strongly associated with NSCLC cell proliferation. [PLoS One] Full Article

Antitumor Activity of Selective MEK1/2 Inhibitor AZD6244 in Combination with PI3K/mTOR Inhibitor BEZ235 in Gefitinib-Resistant NSCLC Xenograft Models
Researchers evaluated the therapeutic efficacy of AZD6244 alone or with BEZ235, an orally available potent inhibitor of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), in gefitinib-resistant non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) models. [J Exp Clin Cancer Res] Abstract | Full Article

Growth-Inhibiting and Apoptosis-Inducing Activities of Myricanol from the Bark of Myrica rubra in Human Lung Adenocarcinoma A549 Cells
Scientists investigated whether or not Myricanol extracted from Myrica rubra bark elicits anti-cancer effects on human lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells by inducing apoptosis in vivo. [Phytomedicine] Abstract

    INDUSTRY NEWS
Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation Joins Lung-MAP, Collaborative Group Multi-Drug, Biomarker-Driven Clinical Trial for Lung Cancer
The Bonnie J Addario Lung Cancer Foundation, has signed on as a collaborating organization with the Lung Cancer Master Protocol (Lung-MAP) clinical trial, which will use genomic profiling to match patients to one of several different investigational treatments that are designed to target the genomic alterations found to be driving the growth of their cancer. [The Bonnie J Addario Lung Cancer Foundation] Press Release

Response Genetics Launches New Test for Cancer Immunotherapy Drug Development
Response Genetics, Inc. announced the availability of new testing capabilities to advance cancer immunotherapy clinical development. The Immuno-Oncology assay, which runs on HTG Molecular’s Edge System, is designed to measure the RNA expression of 26 commonly investigated immunotherapy related genes enabling screening for response to immunoregulatory pathways.
