Targeting the Oncogenic MUC1-C Protein Inhibits Mutant EGFR-Mediated Signaling and Survival in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells
Targeting the oncogenic mucin 1 (MUC1) C-terminal subunit (MUC1-C) in non-small cell lung cancer cells harboring mutant EGF receptor (EGFR) was studied for effects on signaling, growth, clonogenic survival and tumorigenicity. Stable silencing of MUC1-C in H1975/EGFR cells resulted in downregulation of AKT signaling and inhibition of growth, colony formation and tumorigenicity. [Clin Cancer Res] Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
AhR and Arnt Differentially Regulate NF-κB Signaling and Chemokine Responses in Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells
Scientists explored the impact of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) and its binding partner AhR nuclear translocator (Arnt) on p65-activation and two differentially regulated chemokines, CXCL8 and CCL5, in human bronchial epithelial cells. [Cell Commun Signal] Full Article

Therapeutic Effect of Lung Mixed Culture-Derived Epithelial Cells on Lung Fibrosis
Researchers show easily prepared cell populations having therapeutic capacity for lung inflammatory disease that are named as ‘lung mixed culture-derived epithelial cells’ (LMDECs). LMDECs expressed surfactant protein-C and gave rise to type I alveolar epithelial cells (AECs) in vitro and in vivo that partly satisfied type II AEC-like characteristics. [Lab Invest] Abstract

PlGF Mediates Neutrophil Elastase-Induced Airway Epithelial Cell Apoptosis and Emphysema
Scientists hypothesized that excessive neutrophil elastase (NE) may up-regulate placenta growth factor (PlGF) and that PlGF-induced lung epithelial apoptosis mediates the pathogenesis of pulmonary emphysema. Human bronchial epithelial cells, BEAS-2B, and primary mouse type II alveolar epithelial cells were treated with NE. [Respir Res] Abstract | Full Article

Lung Epithelial Cells Resist Influenza A Infection by Inducing the Expression of Cytochrome C Oxidase VIc which Is Modulated by miRNA 4276
Within the first three hours of infection with influenza virus, significant down-regulation of hsa-miRNA-4276 (miRNA-4276) is followed by a two-fold increase in cytochrome c oxidase VIc mRNA was found to occur in human alveolar and bronchial epithelial cells. [Virology] Abstract

Development of an In Vitro Model of Human Bronchial Epithelial Barrier to Study Nanoparticle Translocation
Researchers compared different in vitro models of human lung epithelial monolayers for their suitability to assess the translocation of 50 nm fluorescently labeled silica nanoparticles. [Toxicol In Vitro] Abstract

Simvastatin Increases the Ability of Roflumilast N-Oxide to Inhibit Cigarette Smoke-Induced Epithelial to Mesenchymal Transition in Well-Differentiated Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells In Vitro
Researchers analyzed how roflumilast N-oxide and simvastatin interact on CSE-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition in well-differentiated human bronchial epithelial cells from small bronchi in vitro. [COPD] Abstract

    LUNG CANCER

Role of Nicotinamide N-Methyltransferase in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: In Vitro Effect of shRNA-Mediated Gene Silencing on Tumorigenicity
Scientists examined nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT) expression levels in the human lung cancer cell line A549 by Real-Time PCR, Western blot and catalytic activity assay, and evaluated the effect of NNMT knockdown on cell proliferation and anchorage independent cell growth by MTT and soft-agar colony formation assays, respectively. [Biol Chem] Abstract

Anti-Tumor Activity of Three Ginsenoside Derivatives in Lung Cancer Is Associated with Wnt/β-Catenin Signaling Inhibition
Researchers investigated the anti-tumor activity of three derivatives of 25-hydroxyprotopanaxadiol, namely xl, 1c, and 8b with respect to lung cancer. All three compounds significantly inhibited the growth of the human lung cancer cells A549 and H460. [Eur J Pharmacol] Abstract

Pre-Clinical Evaluation of Cinobufotalin as a Potential Anti-Lung Cancer Agent
Scientists explored the potential anti-lung cancer activity of cinobufotalin in vivo and in vitro, and studied the underlying mechanisms. They demonstrated that cinobufotalin displayed considerable cytotoxicity against lung cancer cells without inducing significant cell apoptosis. [Biochem Biophys Res Commun] Abstract

PEG10 Plays a Crucial Role in Human Lung Cancer Proliferation, Progression, Prognosis and Metastasis
Researchers chose non-small cell lung cancer cell line A549 as a model to analyze the function of paternally expressed gene 10 (PEG10) in proliferation and metastasis in vitro. Our results revealed that expression of PEG10 was closely correlated with clinical TNM grade and patient prognosis in lung cancer. [Oncol Rep] Abstract
