Cigarette Smoke Alters Primary Human Bronchial Epithelial Cell Differentiation at the Air-Liquid Interface
Scientists analyzed whether cigarette smoke extract affected primary human bronchial epithelial cell (pHBEC) differentiation and function. pHBECs were differentiated at the air-liquid interface and differentiation was quantified after 7, 14, 21, or 28 days by assessing acetylated tubulin, CC10, or MUC5AC for ciliated, Clara, or goblet cells, respectively. PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
The In Vitro Generation of Lung and Airway Progenitor Cells from Human Pluripotent Stem Cells
Researchers describe a strategy for directed differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells into developmental lung progenitors, and their subsequent differentiation into predominantly distal lung epithelial cells. [Nat Protoc] Abstract

Efficient Generation of Functional CFTR-Expressing Airway Epithelial Cells from Human Pluripotent Stem Cells
This protocol describes how to generate cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator protein (CFTR)-expressing airway epithelial cells from human pluripotent stem cells. [Nat Protoc] Abstract

House Dust Mite Allergens Induce Monocyte IL-1β Production Triggering an IκBζ Dependent GMCSF Release from Human Lung Epithelial Cells
Scientists analyzed IκBζ‘s role in regulating lung epithelial cell cytokine responses to house dust mite mix (HDM). They found that human bronchial epithelial cells express IκBζ, and release IL-6 and GMCSF when co-cultured with human monocytes and HDM. [Am J Respir Cell Mol Biol] Abstract

Mechanism of Dose-Dependent Regulation of UBE1L by Polyphenols in Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells
The effect of several chemopreventive polyphenols on ubiquitin activating enzyme E1-like (UBE1L) expression in human bronchial epithelial cells was investigated. Lower concentrations of curcumin, (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and resveratrol upregulated UBE1L, while high concentrations of curcumin, EGCG and resveratrol downregulated UBE1L levels. [J Cell Biochem] Abstract

    LUNG CANCER

Radiation Promotes Invasiveness of Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer Cells through Granulocyte-Colony-Stimulating Factor
Radiation-induced granulocyte-colony-stimulating factor promoted migratory and invasive properties by triggering the epithelial-mesenchymal cell transition in non-small-cell lung cancer cells. [Oncogene] Abstract

Simvastatin Downregulates Expression of TGF-βRII and Inhibits Proliferation of A549 Cells via ERK
Researchers demonstrated that simvastatin inhibited activation of ERK, downregulated expression of transforming growth factor-β receptor II (TGF-βRII), and suppressed A549 cell proliferation. [Tumor Biol] Abstract

Maclurin Suppresses Migration and Invasion of Human Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer Cells via Anti-Oxidative Activity and Inhibition of the Src/FAK-ERK-β-Catenin Pathway
Scientists report that maclurin, a major phenolic component of ethanol extracted mulberry twigs, exerts anti-metastatic effect in A549 human non-small-cell lung cancer cells. [Mol Cell Biochem] Abstract

AURKA Upregulation Plays a Role in Fibroblast-Reduced Gefitinib Sensitivity in the NSCLC Cell Line HCC827
Researchers investigated the role of fibroblasts in stromal cell-mediated resistance to gefitinib-induced apoptosis in epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutant non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) cells. While gefitinib induced apoptosis in EGFR-mutant NSCLC cells, apoptosis induction was diminished under stromal co-culture conditions. [Oncol Rep] Abstract

Growth Inhibitory Effects of miR-221 and miR-222 in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells
Scientists investigated the effects of miR-221 and miR-222 overexpression on six lung cancer cell lines, including H460, as well as one immortalized normal human bronchial epithelial cell line, HBEC4. miR-221 and miR-222 induced epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition-like changes in a minority of HBEC4 cells but, unexpectedly, both the microRNAs rather suppressed their invasiveness.
