    TOP STORY
Formulation of Biologically-Inspired Silk-Based Drug Carriers for Pulmonary Delivery Targeted for Lung Cancer
The properties of silk such as biocompatibility and controlled degradation were utilized to formulate carriers for pulmonary drug delivery. The silk-based particles were cytocompatible with A549 human lung epithelial cell line. The cytotoxicity of cisplatin was enhanced when delivered using the cross-linked silk-based particles. PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Paclitaxel-Induced Lung Injury and Its Amelioration by Parecoxib Sodium
Researchers investigated the mechanism of paclitaxel-induced lung injury and its amelioration by parecoxib sodium. They observed changes in alveolar ventilation function, alveolar-capillary membrane permeability, lung tissue pathology and measured the levels of inflammatory cytokines and cyclooxygenase-2 in lung tissue, the expression of tight junction proteins. [Sci Rep] Full Article

The Role of Angiotensin II and Cyclic AMP in Alveolar Active Sodium Transport
Scientists investigated the effect of angiotensin II on alveolar fluid clearance in rats using the isolated perfused lung model and isolated rat alveolar epithelial cells. [PLoS One] Full Article

The Intracellular Domain of Cell Adhesion Molecule 1 Is Present in Emphysematous Lungs and Induces Lung Epithelial Cell Apoptosis
Increased cell adhesion molecule 1 shedding appeared to contribute to the development of emphysema by generating αCTF and the intracellular domain in lung epithelial cells. [J Biomed Sci] Full Article

Cigarette Smoke Extract Induces Apoptosis of Rat Alveolar Type II Cells via the PLTP/TGF-β1/Smad2 Pathway
The effect of the novel function of phospholipid transfer protein in cigarette smoke extract-induced apoptosis of alveolar epithelial cells and the possible mechanism were examined. [Int Immunopharmacol] Abstract

    LUNG CANCER

Lung Cancer Onset in Wild Type Mice Following Bone Marrow Reconstitution with krasv12 Cells
Scientists tested the ability of bone-marrow-derived cells (BMDCs) containing the inducible krasv12 oncogene to initiate lung adenocarcinoma. They showed that lung tumors were derived from donor BMDCs and indicated a direct involvement of bone marrow cells in the development of epithelial cancers. [Sci Rep] Full Article

Identification of Carcinogenic Potential-Associated Molecular Mechanisms in CD133+ A549 Cells Based on MicroRNA Profiles
Researchers aimed to identify carcinogenic potential-related molecular mechanisms in cancer stem cells in lung cancer. The abilities to form sphere and clone, proliferate, migrate, and invade were compared between CD133+ and CD133− cells, as well as drug sensitivity. [Tumor Biol] Abstract

A Comparison of the Biological Effects of 125I Seeds Continuous Low-Dose-Rate Radiation and 60Co High-Dose-Rate Gamma Radiation on Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells
Investigators compared the biological effects of 125I seeds continuous low-dose-rate radiation and 60Co γ-ray high-dose-rate radiation on non-small cell lung cancer cells. [PLoS One] Full Article

miR-34c-3p Functions as a Tumor Suppressor by Inhibiting eIF4E Expression in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
Researchers investigated functions of microRNA miR-34c-3p in non-small cell lung cancer. Overexpression of miR-34c-3p in A549 and H157 cells reduced cell proliferation, migration and invasion, whereas transfection with miR-34c-3p inhibitor produced opposite effects. [Cell Prolif] Abstract

Antisense Oligonucleotide Targeting Eukaryotic Translation Initiation Factor 4E Reduces Growth and Enhances Chemosensitivity of Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer Cells
Investigators used an antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) to inhibit the expression of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E (eIF4E) in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell lines. eIF4E levels were significantly reduced in a dose-dependent manner in NSCLC cells treated with eIF4E-specific ASO compared with control ASO. [Cancer Gene Ther] Abstract

MG132 Enhances the Radiosensitivity of Lung Cancer Cells In Vitro and In Vivo
The authors found that MG132 increased apoptosis and dicentric chromosome ratio of A549 and H1299 cells treated by irradiation. Radiation-induced NF-κB expression and IκBα phosphorylation was attenuated in MG132 plus irradiation-treated cells. [Oncol Rep] Abstract

The Asthma–COPD Overlap Syndrome: Towards a Revised Taxonomy of Chronic Airways Diseases?
The authors consider the epidemiology, mechanisms of disease, current attempts to define and diagnose asthma–chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) overlap syndrome, existing and potential treatment options, and new approaches to the phenotyping and taxonomy of airway diseases. [Lancet Respir Med] Abstract

Unraveling the Complexity of COPD by MicroRNAs: It’s a Small World after All
Investigators link the expression of microRNAs to different features of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and explain their importance in the pathogenesis of this disease. They further discuss their potential to contribute to the development of future therapeutic strategies. [Eur Respir J] Abstract

Epigenetic Modulation as a Therapeutic Approach for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension
The authors provide a general overview of the current advances in epigenetics associated with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), and discuss the potential for improved treatment through understanding the role of epigenetics in the development of PAH. [Exp Mol Med] Full Article
