    Lung Cell Found to Act as Sensor, Regulator of Immune Response
    An uncommon and little-studied type of cell in the lungs has been found to act like a sensor, linking the pulmonary and central nervous systems to regulate immune response in reaction to environmental cues. The cells, known as pulmonary neuroendocrine cells, are implicated in a wide range of human lung diseases, including asthma, pulmonary hypertension, cystic fibrosis and sudden infant death syndrome, among others.     Promotion of a Cancer-Like Phenotype, through Chronic Exposure to Inflammatory Cytokines and Hypoxia in a Bronchial Epithelial Cell Line Model
    Given the recent successes of immune modulators in cancer therapy and the improved understanding of immune evasion by tumors, investigators sought to determine the carcinogenic impact of chronic TNF-α and IL‑1β exposure in a normal bronchial epithelial cell line model. [Sci Rep] Full Article

    Lipopolysaccharide Induces ICAM-1 Expression via a c-Src/NADPH Oxidase/ROS-Dependent NF-κB Pathway in Human Pulmonary Alveolar Epithelial Cells
    Researchers showed that lipopolysaccharide induced intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) expression in human pulmonary alveolar epithelial cells, revealed by Western blotting, RT-PCR, real-time PCR, and promoter assay. [Am J Physiol Lung Cell Mol Physiol] Abstract

    p53- and PAI-1-Mediated Induction of C-X-C Chemokines and CXCR2: Importance in Pulmonary Inflammation Due to Cigarette Smoke Exposure
    Scientists showed increased expression of the C-X-C chemokines CXCL1 and CXCL2 and their receptor CXCR2, and the intercellular cellular adhesion molecule-1, in the lung tissues of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. They also found a similar increase in lung tissues and alveolar epithelial cells (AECs) from wild-type mice exposed to passive cigarette smoke (CS) for 20 weeks and in primary AECs treated with CS extract in vitro.     Comparison of the Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Proanthocyanidin, Quercetin, and Damnacanthal on Benzo(a)pyrene Exposed A549 Alveolar Cell Line
    The authors investigated the potential curative effects of quercetin, damnacanthal, and proanthocyanidine on inflammatory mediators and oxidative stress parameters and to examine the viability of the A549 cell line treated with benzo(a)pyrene in vitro. [Inflammation] Abstract

    MUC5AC Interactions with Integrin β4 Enhances the Migration of Lung Cancer Cells through FAK Signaling
    Researchers evaluated the mechanistic role of MUC5AC on metastasis of lung cancer cells. Functional studies showed that MUC5AC knockdown resulted in significantly decreased migration in two lung cancer cell lines as compared with scramble cells. [Oncogene] Abstract

    CC Chemokine Ligand 18 (CCL18) Promotes Migration and Invasion of Lung Cancer Cells by Binding to Nir1 through Nir1-ELMO1/DOC180 Signaling Pathway
    Investigators report that the high expression of CCL18 in M2-tumor associated macrophages (TAMs) of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tissues and increased expression of CCL18 in TAMs is correlated with the lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, and poor prognosis NSCLC patients. CCL18 can increase the invasive ability of NSCLC cells by binding to its receptor Nir1. [Mol Carcinog] Abstract

    Oroxylin A Inhibits Invasion and Migration through Suppressing ERK/GSK-3β Signaling in Snail-Expressing Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer Cells
    Researchers investigated the anti-invasive effect of oroxylin A on lung cells and uncovered its underlying mechanism. They suggested that oroxylin A could inhibit migration and invasion in Snail-expressing 95-D, and A549 cells whereas it had little effect on non-expressing GLC-82 cells. [Mol Carcinog] Abstract

    Radiation-Induced miR-208a Increases the Proliferation and Radioresistance by Targeting p21 in Human Lung Cancer Cells
    Scientists used microRNA (miRNA) microarray technology to identify serum miRNAs that were differentially expressed before and after radiotherapy in lung cancer patients. They further examined the biological function of miR-208a on cell viability, apoptotic death and cell cycle distribution in human lung cancer cells and explored the probable mechanism.     Mucin 1-Mediated Chemo-Resistance in Lung Cancer Cells
    The authors demonstrated that non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLCs) survive paclitaxel (PTX) treatment. Compared with the progenitor NSCLC A549 cells, the PTX-resistant A549 cells displayed enhanced sphere-formation ability. [Oncogenesis] Full Article

    ATCC Licenses CRISPR/Cas9 Technology from the Broad Institute
    ATCC announced that it licensed CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technology from the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. The first ATCC product developed using the licensed technology is the EML4-ALK Fusion-A549 Isogenic Cell Line.
