    TOP STORY
Syndecan-1 Attenuates Lung Injury during Influenza Infection by Potentiating c-Met Signaling to Suppress Epithelial Apoptosis
Scientists demonstrated that syndecan-1 suppresses bronchial epithelial apoptosis during influenza infection to limit widespread lung inflammation. Furthermore, they determined that syndecan-1 attenuated apoptosis by crosstalking with c-Met to potentiate its cytoprotective signals in airway epithelial cells during influenza infection. [Am J Respir Crit Care Med] Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Decreased Laminin Expression by Human Lung Epithelial Cells and Fibroblasts Cultured in Acellular Lung Scaffolds from Aged Mice
The effects of age on extracellular matrix (ECM) composition in both native and decellularized mouse lungs were assessed as was the effect of young versus old acellular ECM on human bronchial epithelial cells and lung fibroblasts. [PLoS One] Full Article

Cigarette Smoke Enhances the Expression of Profibrotic Molecules in Alveolar Epithelial Cells
Investigators explored the effect of cigarette smoke on the gene expression profile and signaling pathways in alveolar epithelial cells. [PLoS One] Full Article

IL-27 Inhibits the TGF-β1-Induced Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition in Alveolar Epithelial Cells
Scientists assessed the effects of IL-27 on TGF-β1-induced epithelial–mesenchymal transition in alveolar epithelial cells. IL-27 increased the expression of epithelial phenotypic markers, including E-cadherin and β-catenin, and inhibited mesenchymal phenotypic markers, including vimentin and a-SMA in A549 cells. [BMC Cell Biol] Full Article

Propofol Protects Rats and Human Alveolar Epithelial Cells against Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Acute Lung Injury via Inhibiting HMGB1 Expression
Researchers investigated the effects of propofol on the expression of high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) in a rat model of lipopolysaccharide-induced acute lung injury. [Inflammation] Abstract

    LUNG CANCER

Temozolomide-Perillyl Alcohol Conjugate Induced Reactive Oxygen Species Accumulation Contributes to Its Cytotoxicity against Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
Researchers demonstrated how temozolomide-perillyl alcohol conjugate also exhibited its cytotoxicity against non-small cell lung cancer, the most common type of lung cancer, as evidence from cell/tumor proliferation inhibition, G2/M arrest, DNA damage and mitochondrial apoptosis. [Sci Rep] Full Article

JMJD1A Promotes Tumorigenesis and Forms a Feedback Loop with EZH2/let-7c in NSCLC Cells
Jumonji domain containing 1A (JMJD1A) was frequently upregulated in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) compared with para-carcinoma tissues. JMJD1A knockdown significantly inhibited NSCLC cell growth, migration, and invasion in vitro and tumorigenesis in vivo. [Tumor Biol] Abstract

MicroRNA-183 Promotes Migration and Invasion of CD133+/CD326+ Lung Adenocarcinoma Initiating Cells via PTPN4 Inhibition
Researchers explored the regulation of protein tyrosine phosphatase non-receptor type 4 (PTPN4) by miR-183 in vitro using luciferase reporter assays, and they further analyzed the effects of miR-183 on the invasiveness of cancer stem-like cells in vitro and in vivo using transwell and bioluminescence assays. [Tumor Biol] Abstract

Hyperoside Induces both Autophagy and Apoptosis in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells In Vitro
Researchers investigated whether autophagy was involved in the anticancer mechanisms of hyperoside in human non-small cell lung cancer cells in vitro. [Acta Pharmacol Sin] Abstract

Role of Matrix Metalloproteinases in the Pathogenesis of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis
The authors focus on the current and emerging evidence regarding the role of matrix metalloproteases on the fibrotic processes in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis as well as in mouse models of lung fibrosis. [Respir Res]
