PUBLICATIONS(Ranked by impact factor of the journal)Researchers elucidated the effect of cigarette smoke extract on the neutrophil elastase-induced inflammatory response and its molecular mechanism in bronchial epithelial cells. [Exp Mol Med] Full Article The authors evaluated the therapeutic effects of curcumin on airway inflammation using lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and cigarette smoke-induced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) murine models and LPS-stimulated human bronchial epithelial cells. [Inflammation] Abstract Astragaloside IV Inhibits Cigarette Smoke-Induced Pulmonary Inflammation in Mice Researchers investigated the effects of Astragaloside IV on cigarette smoke-induced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. [Inflammation] Abstract LUNG CANCERScientists demonstrated that PAX6 acts as an oncogene responsible for induction of cancer stemness properties in lung adenocarcinoma. Mechanistically, PAX6 promoted GLI transcription, resulting in SOX2 upregulation directly by the binding of GLI to the proximal promoter region of the SOX2 gene. [Oncogene] Abstract Investigators explored the effects and mechanism of CTEN (COOH-terminus tensin-like molecule) on EMT, cell migration and invasion of human lung adenocarcinoma cells. [PLoS One] Full Article Researchers found that short term transforming growth factor β1 (TGFβ1) treatment resulted in a significant epithelial-mesenchymal transition morphological change in TGFβ1-sensitive non-small cell lung cancer cells but not in insensitive cells. [PLoS One] Full Article Scientists determined the anti-tumor effect of wogonoside in human NSCLC A549 cells. They found that wogonoside effectively inhibited A549 cell viability through inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. [Biomed Pharmacother] Abstract CircRNA Circ-BANP-Mediated miR-503/LARP1 Signaling Contributes to Lung Cancer Progression The authors found circular RNA (circ)-BANP was overexpressed in lung cancer tissues. Higher circ-BANP expression was associated with lower survival rate. Moreover, silencing circ-BANP markedly inhibited proliferation, migration and invasion of lung cancer cells in vitro and impaired tumor propagation in vivo. POLICY NEWSIt’s Time to Burst the Biomedical Bubble in UK Research A new study calls for a rebalancing of research and innovation funding to better meet the UK’s economic, social and health needs. [The Guardian] Editorial Chinese Researchers to Get More Autonomy Over Lab Spending Chinese Premier Li Keqiang says the country will ease restrictive rules governing how research funds are used, and cut red tape for researchers. Revised rules are designed to help researchers focus on their work and compete with their counterparts globally. [Nature News] Editorial UK Universities Fall Short on Reporting Misconduct Investigations The United Kingdom should establish a committee to monitor efforts by the nation’s universities to properly conduct misconduct investigations, a parliamentary inquiry recommends. The guidance follows a new report released on 11 July, revealing that one in four UK universities does not comply with research integrity guidelines released six years ago. [Nature News] Editorial
