It was found that glycolytic activity was necessary to maintain intestinal stem cell (ISC) self-renewal and that limiting glycolysis contributed to the generation of secretory lineages from ISCs. The inability to fine-tune glycolysis in ISCs subsequently disturbed the balance between self-renewal and differentiation.
