The authors discuss recent advances on the cellular identity and structural organization of lymphoid, granulocytic, monocytic, megakaryocytic, and erythroid niches throughout the hematopoietic microenvironment, and the mechanisms by which they interconnect and regulate viability, maintenance, maturation, and function of the developing blood cells.
