Scientists revealed that mitochondrial folate metabolism is upregulated in patient-derived leukemic stem cells. They demonstrated that inhibition of mitochondrial one carbon metabolism through impairment of de novo purine synthesis has a cytostatic effect on chronic myeloid leukemia cells.
