Autoimmune Thyroid Diseases as a Cost of Physiological Autoimmune Surveillance

The authors propose that Graves’ disease and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis have the same fundamental origin: both diseases are the cost of a beneficial physiological process called autoimmune surveillance of hypersecreting mutants.
