Using a Treg-specific chaperone-mediated autophagy (CMA)-deficient mouse model, scientists showed that CMA is crucial for maintenance of peripheral tolerance by Tregs. Mice with CMA-defective Tregs display signs of chronic inflammation, which results in reduced survival as they age.
