Researchers demonstrated that an increased physical rigidity of a fibroblast’s environment was sufficient to evoke stromal autophagy. Mechanistically, matrix stiffness was transmitted via Integrin αV receptors and focal adhesion kinase, resulting in stabilization of AMPK at focal adhesion structures.
