xes%2C%20and%20the%20propagation%20of%20a%20myosin%20contraction%20pulse%20across%20the%20tissue.%20Importantly%2C%20focal%20contractions%20preceded%2C%20and%20could%20be%20uncoupled%20from%2C%20the%20death%20and%20expulsion%20of%20infected%20IECs.%20In%20both%20two-dimensional%20monolayers%20and%20three-dimensional%20enteroids%2C%20multiple%20infection-elicited%20contractions%20coalesced%20to%20produce%20shrinkage%20of%20the%20epithelium%20as%20a%20whole.%20Monolayers%20deficient%20for%20Caspase-1%28-11%29%20or%20Gasdermin%20D%20failed%20to%20elicit%20focal%20contractions%20but%20were%20still%20capable%20of%20infected%20IEC%20death%20and%20expulsion.%20Strikingly%2C%20these%20monolayers%20lost%20their%20integrity%20to%20a%20markedly%20higher%20extent%20than%20wild-type%20counterparts.%20We%20propose%20that%20prompt%20NAIP%5C%2FNLRC4%5C%2FCaspase-1%5C%2FGasdermin%20D%5C%2Fmyosin%5Cu2013dependent%20contractions%20allow%20the%20epithelium%20to%20densify%20its%20cell%20packing%20in%20infected%20regions%2C%20thereby%20preventing%20tissue%20disintegration%20due%20to%20the%20subsequent%20IEC%20death%20and%20expulsion%20process.%22%2C%22date%22%3A%222021%5C%2F04%5C%2F20%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22en%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%2210.1073%5C%2Fpnas.2013963118%22%2C%22ISSN%22%3A%220027-8424%2C%201091-6490%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%5C%2F%5C%2Fwww.pnas.org%5C%2Fcontent%5C%2F118%5C%2F16%5C%2Fe2013963118%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222021-04-14T16%3A37%3A35Z%22%7D%7D%5D%7D
