al%20infection%20and%20replication%2C%20they%20did%20not%20exhibit%20a%20cytopathic%20effect%20and%20cell%20death%2C%20outcomes%20that%20were%20strongly%20present%20in%20SARS-CoV-2-infected%20controls%20%28Vero%20E6%20cultures%29.%20A%20comparison%20of%20monolayer%20and%20spheroid%20cultures%20demonstrated%20higher%20infectivity%20and%20replication%20of%20SARS-Cov-2%20in%20actively%20proliferating%20monolayers%2C%20although%20the%20spheroid%20cultures%20exhibited%20higher%20levels%20of%20ACE2.%20Monolayers%20exhibited%20elevation%20of%20some%20tubular%20injury%20molecules%5Cu2014including%20molecules%20related%20to%20fibrosis%20%28COL1A1%20and%20STAT6%29%20and%20dedifferentiation%20%28SNAI2%29%5Cu2014as%20well%20as%20a%20loss%20of%20cell%20identity%2C%20evident%20by%20reduction%20in%20megalin%20%28LRP2%29.%20The%20three-dimensional%20spheroids%20were%20less%20prone%20to%20such%20injury.%5CnConclusions%20SARS-CoV-2%20can%20infect%20kidney%20cells%20without%20a%20cytopathic%20effect.%20AKI-induced%20cellular%20proliferation%20may%20potentially%20intensify%20infectivity%20and%20tubular%20damage%20by%20SARS-CoV-2%2C%20suggesting%20that%20early%20intervention%20in%20AKI%20is%20warranted%20to%20help%20minimize%20kidney%20infection.%22%2C%22date%22%3A%222021%5C%2F06%5C%2F10%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22en%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%2210.1681%5C%2FASN.2020111546%22%2C%22ISSN%22%3A%221046-6673%2C%201533-3450%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%5C%2F%5C%2Fjasn.asnjournals.org%5C%2Fcontent%5C%2Fearly%5C%2F2021%5C%2F06%5C%2F10%5C%2FASN.2020111546%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222021-06-11T18%3A32%3A24Z%22%7D%7D%5D%7D
